Do you really know yourself?
Have you ever taken a personality profile? Have you ever asked
people that kind of know you to brutally honest about what
they thought of you in all aspects of your life? Have you ever
asked this of your friends?
I only say this because I have
been thinking about it a lot lately. Mostly because I have
watched some of the American Idol interviews they did across
the country. No matter what you feel about American Idol you
will concur there were a lot of people who could not sing and
were told that so by the judges and they became upset, beligerant
and were cussing and making other obscenities at the camera.
The sad part about this scenario is it happens every day. There
perceptions of themselves is not correct. The people they showed
on the American Idol for the most part could not sing, were
told so, and still thought they were the American Idol. They
believed they represented the best new singer in all of America.
I
am not writing this to depress anyone but if we don’t
have a proper perspective of ourselves we won’t really
grow into our potential. In general the successful people are
not nearly as great as they think they are and the people who
are struggling with emotions, finances, job opportunities,
and feelings of depression aren’t nearly as hopeless
as they think.
As you know I like what the Bible thinks…here
is one of my favorite passages…
1Samuel 16:7: “…The
LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks
at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
For
about 12 years Marion and I attended a very small Bible Church.
The men wore suits and the ladies wore dresses. Well I wore
sometimes Mr. Bubble T-Shirts and Marion wore pants. We were
accepted and loved. I believe my heart was right. I am now
wearing all yellow. I have on yellow corduroys, yellow socks,
yellow sweaters, and yellow turtle necks. Yes, I am at work.
Yes, I am seeing patients. I am who I am and who I really am
is on the inside. You can criticize me for my appearance. You
are entitled to your opinion. You might say, “He
wants to draw attention to himself.” I would say to
you that I am wearing yellow because I am feeling down today
and sometimes my clothes cheer me up. You see my mother-in-law
has lung cancer and is going through chemotherapy. So every
weekend we go up and visit her. It is stressful for everyone.
You can appreciate working every week and then you have the
weekend to unwind. Giving my mother-in-law nutritional I.V.’s
and watch her struggle is not my idea of unwinding, but I am
grateful to God to give me the opportunity to serve my family
and try to relieve her suffering somewhat. My job also is to
encourage my wife because she is very close to her mother.
If you want to judge me for my clothes that is your right but
because you can’t see inside of me you really shouldn’t
judge me by my clothes.
So why the title of this article? Have
a right view of yourself. Don’t be a mystery to yourself.
Know yourself and whatever faults you have get on a path
to correct them. It is then that you can meet your potential…and
it may involve wearing yellow...it helps me!
